Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace tells the stories of five families: the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, Rostovs, Kuragins, and Drubetskoys. It also examines the effects of the French invasion on Tsarist Russia. The Year 1805, a manuscript, was serialised in The Russian Messenger between 1865 and 1867. Between 1866 and 1869, Tolstoy significantly revised the novel because he was unhappy with the version that had been published. The author again pondered publishing it after his wife, Sophia Tolstaya, transcribed as many as seven "different" manuscripts. It is thought that Tolstoy took the title from Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's 1861 book, La Guerre et la Paix, before changing the name to War and Peace.
