The primary focus of this comparative study of five Indian English poets is on content analysis of their poems in order to determine the extent to which Indian experience and sensibility are conveyed in them. Because the issue of Indian sensibility does not arise in the case of the regional writers in India, the choice of English as the medium of creative expression, particularly poetry, casts doubt on the credentials of the Indian English poet. One does not automatically lose their Indianness just because they write in English, which is a second language for the Indian writer, as Vrinda Nabar rightly points out. The question of whether the entire Nalive/Deshi heritage is rejected in favour of some alien sensibility needs to be stressed.
