Yamuna is at sea. A long-standing relationship has ended. Her mother and she are at odds over their ancestral home in Chingleput, which she adores and calls home. Even her PhD in Tamil Nadu on early twentieth-century music appears to be going nowhere?until it leads her to an unexpected puzzle from the past. During her research, she becomes fascinated by her enigmatic grandaunt, Lalitha, a Carnatic musician who rose to prominence at a time when thirteen-year-old brides were the norm. Then she comes across a letter written by her own grandmother to her grandfather, which provides another glimpse into Lalitha's life. She wishes to learn more. However, the more questions she poses, the closer her family becomes.
