An anthology of 17 of the oldest translated short stories in Indian languages is called Timeless Indian Short Stories. We have selected a few gems for the discriminating reader from a genuine gold mine of stories from India. It has been our goal to illustrate the development of the Indian short story in English translation, starting with the one-page "Ek Tokri Bhar Mitti" by Madhavrao Sapre, frequently regarded as the first Hindi short story, moving on to the classic "Usne Kaha Tha" by Chandradhar Sharma, "Guleri," Parashuram's slow-burn satire "Dakshin Rai," and finally to the lofty, masterful storytelling of Premchand in Most importantly, Timeless Indian Short Stories are available.
