The word Peeth generally means seat. As such, any temple can be called the seat of a deity. But Peethasthan refers specifically to those places where, according to the story described in the scriptures, after hearing the condemnation of Sati by her father Daksha in the Daksha Yajna, Shiva, who was mad with grief and anger after hearing Sati's death, while traveling the world with Sati's dead body, Sati's body (or ornaments) spun in Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra to protect the world, fell. Sometimes, a Devi temple located at the place of sadhana of a famous saint is also promoted as Peethasthan, although they are actually sadhanapeeths or siddhapeeths, not satipeeths, and they are not included in this discussion.
