Beyond the Freedom Movement and the political and administrative confines of prime ministership, Nehru's influence was felt. As a man of letters, Nehru was responsible for starting the Sahitya Akademi, a centre for literature, the National School of Drama, and the National Institute of Design. He also founded the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Management, which are now spread out across the nation, in the fields of technology and business management. He was equally responsible for the construction of factories and dams, which he saw as the temples of modern India. Democracy, secularism, socialism, and non-alignment?the four fundamental pillars of Indian nationhood as envisioned and put into practise by Nehru?have today changed to the point where they are nearly no longer recognisable or have even been abandoned. The deciding statement may come from Nayantara Sahgal, who writes in her Introduction, "No Nehru, no contemporary India," as the argument between Nehru's admirers who acknowledge his lasting contributions and his critics who try to downplay them rages on.
