Jalputra is the first novel of Harishankar Jaldas. Harishankar Jaldas II is a fisherman who wrote Bengali novels about the life of a fisherman after Advaita Mallavarman. There are many famous novels in Bengali literature about the life of riverine fishermen. For example Manik Banerjee's Padmanadi Majhi, Advaita Mallavarman's Titas is the name of a river, Sameresh Bose's Ganga, Sadhan Chattopadhyay's Gahin Gang, Shyamal Gangopadhyay's Ganga is the name of a river etc. But before Jalputra, no novel was written about sea-dependent fishermen in any Bengal. Bay of Bengal Jalputra is one of the characters in the novel. On one side of this novel is the story of a fisherwoman named Bhubaneswari's struggle for survival, on the other side is the story of Jalputras becoming rights-conscious. Jalputra is distinct from the previously-mentioned novels in subject-variety, variation-technique, character-building, language-use. Unlike the novels. In the first novel, Harishankar said that the fringes will be the masters of his fiction. Harishankar Jaldas's language has charm - examples are scattered throughout Jalputra's body.
